Sleep, swelling and the first 72 hours
What the first three days usually feel like, and the small habits that help.

The first 72 hours are the least glamorous part of surgery and the part patients most want to know about. Here is what we tell everyone in our recovery suite.
Sleeping
Sleep with your head raised on two or three pillows
Keep a water glass and your medication list within reach
Plan short naps rather than one long sleep on day one
Swelling and bruising
Some swelling and bruising is normal and tends to peak around day two or three before easing. Your care team will tell you what is expected for your procedure and when to call us.
Moving
Short, gentle walks around the house help circulation. Avoid lifting, straining and bending until your surgeon says you can.
When to call
Call the 24-hour line on your discharge card if you have increasing pain, fever, or anything that does not feel right. We would always rather hear from you.
Begin
Considered change, planned together.
Start with a private video consultation. A surgeon reviews your goals, answers your questions and tells you honestly whether surgery is the right step.
